C-man: "I hate identifying the verbs. It's not like I am ever going to need this."
Me: "I use that skill every day at work - identifying, conjugating, making sure I'm using the perfect word."
C-man: "Yeah, Mom, but I'm not going to get a writing job. I'm going to be in sports."
And there you have it.

He has a point there. Sports writers are notorious for bad sentence structure, poor grammar, misspellings -- even with a spell checker.
But if you are a good writer -- whatever your field -- you stand above the rest. My "little boy" -- in his forties -- is a database administrator and computer technician, whose superiors look to him to write correspondence and information because he is the best writer.
I work in sports and I use grammar all the time :-)
